Baselworld: Thursday, March 27, 2014

Today was the opening day of Baselworld 2014, the world’s largest watch fair. Here is a glimpse of some of the new introductions I saw today. Chanel J12 Blue Light, in high-tech white ceramic bracelet and case. It is like last year’s all-white version, except that this year Chanel has applied blue numerals and tips on the hands. The special light blue color is fully luminescent, so it glows in the dark. It contains a self-winding movement with a 42-hour power reserve, and is water resistant to 200 meters. Dior Grand Soir, a one-of-a-kind piece with pink sapphires custom cut READ MORE

Baselworld 2014 Wednesday, March 26, 2014

Today was press day at Baselworld, with the fair opening at mid-day to give us a preview of a few brands’ introductions. Among them were new models from Patek Philippe, Chopard, Christophe Claret and Louis Vuitton (which is showing off-site). The Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Chronograph, Ref. 5960 was originally introduced in 2006 in a platinum case.  Outside the Nautilus and Aquanaut collections, there are few steel Patek Philippe watches. The movement, automatic Caliber CH 28-520 IRM QA 24H, is unchanged, as is the case (except that it is now stainless steel), but the dial has been refurbished and the READ MORE

Haute Living Watch of the Week: Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 and 1966 Blue

Haute Living Watch of the Week: Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 and 1966 Blue

This week we feature two watches, both vintage, in one new – or rather, old – color. Girard-Perregaux, one of the elite Swiss heritage brands, appeals to its archives for inspiration from authentic models introduced in key eras. Girard-Perregaux’s two flagship models, 1966 and the vintage 1945 are being reissued in the traditional blue color of the brand, which has played a role in many of its historic timepieces. In the closing years of the 19th century, Girard-Perregaux’s founder, Jean-François Bautte, was one of the first master watchmakers to make successful use of the distinctive color of blue on these READ MORE

Watch Review: Jaeger-LeCoultre Hybris Mechanica 11 Minute Repeater

Watch Review: Jaeger-LeCoultre Hybris Mechanica 11 Minute Repeater

This is the eleventh creation in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s haute horology Hybris Mechanica collection and, at 7.9mm thick, represents the world’s smallest minute repeater/grand complication with an automatic movement. The real feat of this watch is the ratio between the thickness of the movement and the thickness of the case. “People don’t know how we can place a 4.8mm movement inside a 7.9mm case,” says Jaeger-LeCoultre creative and marketing director Stephane Belmont. He says normally the case of a 4.8mm movement would be 9.5 or 10mm thick. “We did it by questioning how the components in a watch are arranged, and then READ MORE

Best Black Dials of SIHH

Best Black Dials of SIHH

Despite the ascendance of the blue dial as one of the most visible trends in high watchmaking, the popularity of black dials does not look to be waning anytime soon. Instead, it has become a modern classic. The black-on-black, or “blacked out” theme does seem to be fading, possibly due to readability issues, but the following watches, all introduced at the SIHH in January, use black with a contrasting color for higher legibility. There are rose or yellow gold highlights, red hands and markers and minute tracks, and ultra legible contrasts in black and white.  The new blue is nice, READ MORE
