Diamond Delights: A Look At The Some Of The Best Jewelry Timepieces

Diamond Delights: A Look At The Some Of The Best Jewelry Timepieces

In my view, jewelry watches are undervalued by the typical watch aficionado. Most of the hobbyists and bloggers who write online about watches are connoisseurs of the timepiece, and they rave about new movements and inventions, often with great insight. But when it comes to watchmaking’s metiers d’art, they hit a wall. Of the metiers that do get some press, marquetry and enamelling seem to be the stars of the show, even among the journalists who are very good at covering watches. I think gemsetting is perceived as unchallenging, and girly. I am under strict instructions by one of the READ MORE

Corum Goes Sailing With CEO Antonio Calce

Corum Goes Sailing With CEO Antonio Calce

I’ve always thought it would be great to be a watch company president, meeting all those glamorous ambassadors and participating in cool sponsorships. Take Antonio Calce, for example, the CEO of Corum Watch. A couple of weeks ago he hosted an awards dinner with the 14-member crew of the Banque Populaire V sailing team just after it won the Jules Verne Trophy. Calce presented special editions of the brand’s Admiral Cup model to each member of the team, which set a new world record (23 hours, 14 minutes and 13 seconds) for the fastest circumnavigation of the world. This week, Calce was READ MORE

New Face Of Tradition: Girard-Perregaux’s Young Watchmakers

New Face Of Tradition: Girard-Perregaux’s Young Watchmakers

A few years ago we were all hearing about how hard it was for the watch industry to recruit enough watchmakers to do repairs on existing movements, never mind develop new ones. Brand reps would say things like “there are only three guys in Switzerland who can make this complication.” Watchmaking was just not resonating as a sexy vocation for young people. So it’s nice to see Girard-Perregaux’s new campaign showcasing eight of its bright young watchmakers both at the bench and behind the scenes. G-P is taking them all on a worldwide publicity tour this spring to introduce the READ MORE

Rolex Takes Manhattan

Rolex Takes Manhattan

The new Rolex boutique in New York City is no pop-up store. Designed by the company’s Geneva-based architects, every inch of the 1,500-sq.-ft. boutique is designed to reflect the essence of the upscale brand – Italian leather, imported marble and bronze, custom display cases, panelled walls. The boutique, Rolex’s first in the city, was opened by Wempe, the Fifth-Avenue  jeweler, well-known for its watch brands, and a long-time Rolex partner that started selling the brand’s watches in the 1960s. The boutique is located at Fifth Avenue at 53rd Street, the heart of the Fifth Avenue shopping district, nearly across the READ MORE
