Watch of the Week: Omega Seamaster Diver 300M

Twenty-five years ago Omega launched the Seamaster Diver 300M. It was part of a collection that was one of the pillars of Omega for decades, but this new watch was different. With its distinct bracelet design, wave dial and charismatic bezel it broke the mould and became an icon. For a diving watch that is quite something to accomplish, as in many cases their design is very traditional, often using one or more design elements of that other icon; the Rolex Submariner.

With the latest version of the Seamaster Diver 300M did Omega not only create a worthy successor of the first version but also showcase their expertise. We find this in both materials as well as technology. The dial is now made from ceramic and marks the return of the wave pattern. The bezel is also crafted from this material with the numerals and hour indexes, depending on the version, made from Ceragold™ or white enamel.

The Seamaster Diver 300M is powered by caliber 8800. This is a very modern movement and an interesting one as well. It offers a 55-hour power reserve, automatic winding and a co-axial escapement. Its very high precision earned it a Master Chronometer certification from METAS, but the best part is that this very well decorated movement can be seen through a sapphire caseback. Despite this is the water resistance of this Seamaster, as its name already indicates, 300 meters and on top of that does magnetism hardly have any effect on the precision of it.

With a diameter of 42mm did the Seamaster grow modestly in comparison to the previous generation, and also some other details, such as the helium escape valve, have changed. Its character stayed however exactly the same. It will delight fans of the original version, while at the same time being able to capture the attention a new generation of enthousiasts.
