Watch of the Week: A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Outsize Date
This year the large date joined, once again, the Saxonia collection of A. Lange & Söhne, and it might be a watch a lot of watch connoisseurs have been waiting for. It combines A. Lange & Söhne ‘s purest design with their iconic oversized date. The result is an epiphany of German style and class, now in a slightly large package than the original dating back from 1994.
For this, we cannot credit only the dial design, but also its color: A. Lange & Söhne opted for black, which gives the watch a formal, dare I say even strict, look which suits the watch very well. For the Saxonia the outsize date also got a redesign, sporting a black background with white, printed numerals, which greatly contribute to its pure looks. Also its diameter is with 38.5-millimeter spot on. As a true gentleman, it gives the watch presences, yet will never be overbearing. With a height of only 9.6mm, it will also fit easily under the cuff of the gentleman wearing it.
The movement is about as understated as the watch itself. Fitted with calibre L086.8, it features a full-size, central-mounted oscillating weight with platinum mass, which moves over the signature three-quarter plate made from untreated German silver. This hides away most of the gear train, placing even more emphasis on the hand-engraved balance cock with its swan-neck regulator. The movement is equipped with a single mainspring barrel, yet A. Lange & Söhne achieved to get a generous power reserve of 72 hours out of it.
The Saxonia Outsize Date is available in two different colors gold. In rose gold, it is a very classical proposition, while white gold shows off the more formal and understated side of the watch. Both are priced the same, at $25.900,- and a very welcome addition to the Saxonia collection!
