Tankoa Yachts Announced The Sale Of The Fourth Tankoa S501
The hybrid propulsion system is the future of yacht pivoting the yachting industry to renewable energy resources. Italian yacht company, Tankoa introduced its 50m series that full aluminium body superyacht built with a hybrid propulsion system. Tankoa S501 Bintador was the first superyacht to be introduced at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2019. The Tankoa S501 Hybrid the 4th in the 50-metre series designed by Francesco Paszkowski. It is currently 40% complete with the hull and superstructure completed and assembled, preparations for outfitting underway, and installation of the main machinery in progress.

The hybrid propulsion system for the yacht is developed by MAN in conjunction with Siemens. The system would provide three cruising modes: traditional-diesel, diesel-electric and full-electric. The Diesel-Electric Mode (DEM) has two variable-speed generators powering the electric motors. With the main engines off, the S501 can achieve speeds up to 10.5 knots and fuel consumption of 12 litres per nautical mile. DEM saves not only fuel but also limits the noise.

In Hybrid mode, one of the two main engine shafts generates the electrical power to run the second motor for propulsion and hotel needs which yields a cruising range of 4000 nautical miles at 12 knots. This mode does not use any of the two engines. While the Booster Mode has both main engines and generators supply power to the two electric motors and feeds the hotel loads. The yacht finds a top speed of 18 knots with no strain on the engines.

The Tankoa S501 is set to be delivered at the end of 2021. The company also plans to expand its production capacity in the next few years. “We’re preparing to the grow the company in a sustainable way to optimize operational costs and increase our market segment,” says Tankoa CEO Vincenzo Poerio. “Clearly, it makes good business sense to spread fixed overheads across three or more projects in build each year, as opposed to one or two. We will remain a boutique shipyard and if anything be more flexible when it comes to customisation, a distinguishing Tankoa asset at a time when other brands are going the other way and becoming more resistant to modification requests from clients.”
