Haute Living Watch of the Week: Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Special Homage

Haute Living Watch of the Week: Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Special Homage

This special edition features the collection’s unique chronograph display with a stationary “nib”indicator on a moveable chronograph wheels – the conventional chronograph features moving hands. The ceramic dial is heavily imprinted with Super-LumiNova pigments that can only be seen in the dark – including the hour circles on the main dial at 12 o’clock. It is inspired by Nicolas Rieussec’s first patented chronograph from 1821, originally invented to time horse races. Functions also include a date window, second time zone (via a skeletonized hour hand) and a day/night indicator. It contains Caliber MB R200, with a 72-hour power reserve.  READ MORE

Haute Time Ladies’ Watch of the Day: Roger Dubuis Velvet High Jewelry

Roger Dubuis gets everything right with the clean, well-matched emeralds, rubies or sapphires in its Velvet Haute Joaillerie collection. Colored gemstones can often look like a confusing kaleidescope on a watch dial. A wristwatch is a small canvas, so gemstones should be used discreetly, in no more than two colors, and should be chosen from nothing less than the highest quality categories, especially with gems that are typically included, such as emerald – even the finest emerald has some “jardin,” or plant-like inclusions The colored gemstones on this extraordinary watch, cut as cushion shapes, are highly saturated and very clean. Piaget at SIHH 2014

Piaget at SIHH 2014

Of Piaget’s 35 manufacture calibers, 25 of them are ultra-thin, according to Piaget CEO Philippe Leopold-Metzger, who presented some of the brand’s 2014 models at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in January. The brand now holds 14 world records for thin calibers. It comes as no surprise, then, that Piaget introduced the world’s thinnest mechanical watch this year, at 3.65mm thick, the Altiplano 900P. This feat is achieved not just by miniaturizing as many components as possible but by eliminating the dial plate. The caseback doubles as the main plate, onto which the movement is built, with the READ MORE

Best of SIHH 2014: Five Personal Favorites

Best of SIHH 2014: Five Personal Favorites

I see hundreds of watches every year at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva, and all of them are impressive – exhibitors at this fair, after all, represent watchmaking’s elite. I always come away with favorites, though, and this year, the pieces I found memorable are either aesthetically or technically superb in some way. The Cartier Ballon Bleu’s flinqué enamel dial, for example, demonstrates the subtle beauty of a well designed watch with an exquisite finish. I chose the Panerai pocket watch not just because of its beauty but because Panerai has been making waves with pocket READ MORE

Haute Time Ladies Watch of the Week: Bovet Recital 11 Miss Alexandra

Haute Time Ladies Watch of the Week: Bovet Recital 11 Miss Alexandra

What better watch to gift on Valentine’s Day than one with hands that form a subtle heart shape when they meet. The Bovet Récital 11 Miss Alexandra accomplishes this with unusually shaped hour and minute hands that form a heart every hour just before they intersect. They stand out against a decorated dial of guilloched mother-of-pearl. The upper part of the main oval dial is dominated by a realistic moon disk that was created by engraving it with the likeness of the surface of the moon and filling in hollow parts with a luminous material, so that it seems to READ MORE

Panerai at SIHH 2014: Pocket Watches and Chronographs

Paneristas have a lot to look forward to when Panerai’s new introductions, launched at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in January, hit the stores. The star of the show this year was the Panerai Radiomir Pocket Watch 3 Days Oro Rosso (there is also an Oro Bianco – so, both red and white gold versions), with a hand-wound caliber P.3001/10, driven by two barrels for a 3-day power reserve. The watch has a hinged cover that can be personalized, and a sandwich dial that features a sun-brushed finish. It was inspired by pocket watches sold by the brand READ MORE
