Metiers Monday: Piaget Altiplano Miniature Embroidery

Metiers Monday: Piaget Altiplano Miniature Embroidery

Just when you thought you’d seen every material that could possibly be used to create a metiers dial – from straw marquetry to mosaics – Piaget surprises us by introducing a new one. At SIHH, it showed two new models with dials featuring the haute couture technique of silk embroidery using two methods: laminate couching thread embroidery and needle painting embroidery. Laminate couching embroidery is a technique of beating gold or silver into gold or silver leaf and cutting the sheets into small ribbons and mixing it with colored threads. To create the dial, the silk is first stretched and READ MORE

Haute Living Watch of the Week: A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Ref. 235

Haute Living Watch of the Week: A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Ref. 235

The new A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Ref. 235 honors the birth date of the company founder, Ferdinand A. Lange, whose philosophy of design was “Medèn ágan – nothing in excess,” a call for moderation and modesty, posted at the entrance to the ancient Temple of Delphi. This motto characterized the style of the brand’s pocket watches, which inspired the design of the new 1815 wristwatch. It bears all the hallmarks of the Lange & Söhne style, with its two-tier design, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock, solid-silver dial, contoured bezel, slender lugs, railway-track minute scale and highly legible black Arabic READ MORE

Richard Mille at the SIHH 2014

Richard Mille at the SIHH 2014

Among the new models introduced by Richard Mille at the SIHH in Geneva were three athlete-focused sports watches, two of which showcase the brand’s proprietary NTPT carbon case material. NTPT, or North Thin Ply Technology, is a type of carbon used for making racing sails, Formula 1 race cars and aeronautical components. The case is constructed by layering carbon fibers – over 600 layers – which produces a wood-grain look that is unique to each watch. NTPT is extremely lightweight, corrosion-proof and exceptionally rigid and impact-resistant. Thus, it is being used on the brand’s sports watches, including the latest version of READ MORE

Best Open Casebacks of SIHH

Today’s fine mechanical watches are as beautiful from the back as they are from the wrist-up side. In fact, just to qualify as a fine timepiece, the movement has to be decorated. This includes chamfering, which means beveling the edges of components; perlage, or circular graining, usually done on the base plate; Côtes de Genève, a striped pattern that often decorates the rotor; and various degrees of polishing and engraving. These casebacks were standouts among the watches introduced at the SIHH in Geneva. A. Lange & Söhne 1815 (Ref 235), with the hand-wound Caliber L051.1, with a 55 hour power READ MORE

Haute Time Ladies Watch of the Week: Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Metropolitaine

The Tonda Metropolitaine, introduced at the SIHH in January, is an extensive new collection from Parmigiani Fleurier with both men’s and ladies’ models. For the ladies, this model represents the brand’s first round automatic watch for ladies. It contains the in-house automatic Caliber PF310 movement, with two series-coupled barrels for a 50-hour power reserve. The dial is finished in a flinqué guilloché pattern of tight spirals, and has been finished in an Amaranth color, a magenta-like red. A thin layer of red gold outlines the small seconds and date window, and the numerals and indexes are inlaid. The 34mm case READ MORE
