TAG Heuer Honors the Carrera at Baselworld

TAG Heuer Honors the Carrera at Baselworld

This is the year of the Carrera at TAG Heuer, as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of the brand’s iconic chronograph. The watch was created in 1963 by Jack Heuer, himself a brand icon, who retires this year as honorary chairman. To mark his retirement, as well as the anniversary, Heuer created a modern limited edition piece to represent the continuation of the Carrera collection while echoing the past. The new Jack Heuer Edition of the Carrera Calibre 1887 Chronograph is inspired by the original, yet the asymmetrical case design is based on the TAG Heuer Carrera Mikrogirder, slightly rising READ MORE

Breguet, the Ultimate Heritage Brand, Continues to Innovate

Breguet, the Ultimate Heritage Brand, Continues to Innovate

Breguet, founded in 1775, is famous as the brand that invented the tourbillon and the raised terminal curve known as the Breguet overcoil, and you would think that would be enough. The brand has not stopped innovating, however, having filed more than 100 patents in the last 10 years alone. Some of the results of Breguet’s ongoing dedication to research and development were on display in Basel, beginning with the Classique Chronometrie 7727. It contains the 574DR, the brand’s 10Hz high frequency movement (72,000 VpH, compared to the standard 28,000), first introduced in 2011. High frequency means greater accuracy, but READ MORE

Throwback Thursday: Zenith El Primero Sets the Bar on High Frequency

The El Primero is actually a movement rather than a particular model. In 1969, in the race to create the first automatic chronograph, only Zenith succeeded in designing a fully integrated movement, based around a column wheel. Noted for its high-frequency oscillations (and therefore greater accuracy), the 36,000 VPH mighty El Primero quickly became a highly sought-after industry standard. Its mettle was uniquely tested in 1970 by being strapped to the landing gear of a Boeing 707 on a flight from Paris to New York. Subjected to drastic changes in temperature, pressure and turbulence, it kept perfect time – apart READ MORE

Louis Vuitton: Elite Watchmaker

Louis Vuitton: Elite Watchmaker

Among the many impressive introductions in Basel this year were some brilliant timepieces launched by Louis Vuitton. Die hard watchonistas will say, ‘What? A fashion brand?’ to which I say, no, a couture brand. Louis Vuitton is a luxury fashion and leather goods company, but it is also watchmaker – having acquired high watchmaking workshop La Fabrique du Temps three years ago –  and in Basel this year, they proved once again how serious they are about watchmaking. First with a new movement for ladies, an automatic tourbillon built especially for women’s watches, and with a world premiere split-seconds chronograph READ MORE
