Watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin is presenting his first chronograph at Baselworld this month, the Spirit Seafire. The dial is distinguished not only by the chronograph counters but by a seconds counter at 9 o’clock in the form of the Speake-Marin “topping tool” logo. (A topping tool is a hand operated rotating wheel that cuts out the teeth in a component wheel, and is rarely used in today’s automated manufactures). Panerai’s heritage as a pioneer of left-handed chronographs goes back to the days when the company made watches for the commandos of the Royal Italian Navy in the 1930s and ’40s.
