Ulysse Nardin Takes Artistic Approach To Camouflage With New Freak X Razzle Dazzle
The Freak X is a watch that already makes a powerful visual impact. With part of its gear train placed on the dial side, accompanied by a high-tech flying carrousel, is it a true horological delicacy that won’t go unnoticed. With the new Freak X Razzle Dazzle makes Ulysse Nardin the watch, even more, an eyecatcher. The pattern is reminiscent of that of zebra’s, who use it to conceal themselves and confuse their predators. Especially in World War I, the British Royal Navy painted their ships with a similar pattern, hoping to confuse enemy ships to such extent that it was hard(er) for them to place a hit. It later on also became quite a popular pattern within the art scene.
The reason for this is rather obvious, as the geometrical pattern is nothing short of captivating and close to hypnotizing. Ulysse Nardin applied the pattern on the movement plate. To achieve this with the high quality required by Ulysse Nardin, they combine three different techniques. A laser makes the intricate shapes on the movement parts, after which a combination of electroplating/galvanic treatment with lacquer gives it its final appearance.
Ulysse Nardin will make 30 pieces of the Freak X Razzle Dazzle, with two strap options, one in black, the other in white, but both featuring “point de bride” stitching which matches the watch very nicely. What all thirty watches also have in common is the 43mm case made from titanium, featuring sandblasted and satin finishes as well as a DLC coating. The automatic movement has a power reserve of 72 hours and comes with a flying carrousel, visible at the front, that makes a full rotation every hour. As a pioneer in the use of silicium, this Ulysse Nardin features this innovative material in both the balance wheel and the oversized oscillator.
