Trend-spotting: Is Rose Gold Fading? (Part 1)
Rose gold watches, which began when watchmakers started mixing pure gold with copper, have dominated releases in the past decade. But all signs are pointing to the end of the rose gold trend, with the return of the classical yellow gold, and the introduction of the more restrained white gold alloy, one of the big stories at this year’s fairs. In the first part of a series-long look at gold timepieces, we look at our Top 5 white gold watches from 2014.
The new Rolex GMT-Master II was one of the most eagerly anticipated releases of the year at BaselWorld. Interestingly the “Pepsi” red and blue cerachrom bezel, one of Rolex’s most iconic designs, was released exclusively in solid 18k white gold. That decision alone should indicate the state of rose gold in the watch industry.
Also unveiled at Baselworld 2014, Omega’s De Ville Trésor, pays homage to a watch released nearly 50 years ago. If it remains faithful to the original design, which was characterized by a classical yellow gold case, the new model is also available in 18k white gold. Omega also sought modernity inside the watch, by outfitting it with one of the most advanced Co-Axial movements ever produced by the brand.
One of the largest, and most unusual timepieces of the year, the new Pilot Type 20 features a richly hand-engraved bezel, and lugs in 18k white gold. This 60mm wide watch is the latest Zenith Pilot Montre d’Aéronef Type 20 update, and introduces a novel sapphire crystal ring, which allows the user to see the movement inside.
Vacheron Constantin released several white gold models this year, including a Matle Small model for women, and an updated Small Seconds model for men, previously available only in rose gold. The new Small Seconds model also features a minute track, enhancing the legibility and appearance of the dial, and an open caseback, giving the user the chance to view the previously hidden Calibre 4400AS.
As with Omega’s De Ville Trésor, this watch takes its inspiration from a predecessor, an ultra thin yellow gold pocket watch created by Jaeger-LeCoultre in 1907. This time again, it’s available in a more modern looking white gold version. It’s also a record-breaking watch, since it’s 4.05mm thick is the flattest manually winding mechanical wristwatch.
