Throwback Thursday: Rolex Submariner Reference 5513 “Meters First”
The Rolex Submariner is one of those watches that truly deserves the title of icon. It remains the benchmark of diving watches and a truly special Rolex to own. There are quite a few exceptional models in the rich history of the Submariner, often made for a limited period of time or in very low quantities, of which this reference 5513 “Meters First” is one.
Reference 5513 is one of the most desirable models to many collectors. It was launched in 1962, a time when the Submariner was a tool watch pur sang, and less associated with a luxury lifestyle as it is today. Its design was very clean and practical, with a case measuring 39mm in diameter and crown guards protecting the crown from impact. While most of the reference 5513 were fitted with dials featuring regular hour markers, this particular model has the so-called Explorer dial. It is a reference to that other famous Rolex model, where the three, six, and nine are Arabic numerals.
It gets even more unique, as there is a tiny dot underneath the six. In the 1960s, the regulations around using radium were tightened, and with this dot, one could identify this Rolex as one with lower radioactivity. These types of dials are nicknamed quite appropriately “exclamation mark” dials. All combined, does this make for a very rare Submariner, also because it is one of the earliest watches of the reference 5513. As it was a tool watch and often used as such, it is rare to see such a rare and old version of this Rolex in such a remarkable state. This one even comes with its original Oyster-bracelet, adding even more to its appeal. Currently, these watches are therefore highly collectible and have made a complete transition from tool watch to being an undeniable item of luxury.
