Throwback Thursday: Heuer Autavia GMT

When people think of a vintage sports watch with a second timezone, the Rolex GMT-master is often the one that comes to mind first. However, there have been other, equally imposing sports watches with this complication, like the Heuer Autavia GMT. The one we have here is from around 1970 and part of the second generation of reference 2446, with its distinct red chronograph hand, larger registers, and fluted pushers.

The Autavia GMT combines several desirable features. It is not only fitted with a GMT-function but has a chronograph as well, two of the most popular and useful complications. It is powered by a modified Valjoux caliber 72, which is fitted in a 40mm large case. That makes the watch very wearable, even today. The legibility is superb, with the white subdials on the black dial, and the red chronograph seconds and GMT-hand. The watch also gets a lot of character from its bezel with 24-hour markers, which is in the Pepsi-colors. The cherry on top with this watch is the original Gay Frères bracelet that gives the Autavia GMT that extra dash of seventies appeal.

While there is something to say for finding a vintage watch like this Autavia GMT in pristine condition, we prefer the one in the photos. It might not be perfect, but its scratches, faded bezel, and discolorations not only give it that vintage feel but also show that the watch has been enjoyed. In return, that’s also what you can do with it. A vintage watch in nearly new condition will have a significant portion of its value attributed to the fact that it is hardly ever used. This automatically makes it a ‘safe queen’ while an Autavia GMT like this can be enjoyed for what it was made for; to be worn on the wrist and accompany you through life.
