SIHH 2016: MB&F Debuts Two New Pieces
At this year’s SIHH, independent watchmaker MB&F showed off two new pieces that quickly got collectors talking.
The first, the HM N°6 SV (The SV stands for “Sapphire Vision”), is a remixed edition of the HM6 ‘Space Pirate’ and adds to the already distinctive look of that piece by adding two sapphire crystal plates that sandwich a precious metal “streamliner” case band. The new sapphire plates highlight the visually-striking mechanics powering the piece.
Like the HM6 ‘Space Pirate’ before it, The HM N°6 SV is stylistically reminiscent of mid-century American Grehound “Streamliner” buses. At the front of the watch, two spherical domes rotate vertically and display hours and minutes via large numerals. At the back of the piece, a pair of turbines spin horizontally and automatically regulate the winding system in order to minimize stress on the intricate mechanics.
“I always thought that the most beautiful part of HM6 was its movement, and that it was a shame not to show it. But it was only recently that the technology of machining sapphire crystal allowed us to create such a complex case,” explains MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser.
The MB&F HM N°6 SV is available in a limited edition of 10 pieces in platinum/sapphire crystal and 10 pieces in red gold/sapphire crystal.
MB&F’s other piece revealed at SIHH 2016 was Sherman, a unique robotic table clock made from high-end materials. Conceived by MB&F and crafted by L’Epée 1839 – Switzerland’s only specialized high-end clock manufacture, the piece represent’s CEO Maximilian Büsser’s childhood obsession with robots.
On top of Sherman’s head lies a transparent blown mineral glass dome that contains his “brain,” a regulator that control’s the precision of the clock’s time. Sherman’s arms are completely adjustable, while his hands can hold small objects like pens. The caterpillar tracks at the bottom are also fully-functional, allowing Sherman to traverse a typical desk.
Sherman is available in 200 plated pieces, 200 gold-plated pieces, and and 50 diamond-set gold-plated pieces.
