Lo Scienziato Is Back And This Time With A Grade 5 Titanium Upgrade
Hailed as one of the most challenging projects of Panerai Laboratoria di Idee, the Luminor Tourbillon GMT- Lo Scienziato is a step above the rest.
Unveiled only a few days ago at the “Survival Instruments for Modern Heroes” event in Shanghai, the Luminor Tourbillon GMT – Los Scienziato attracted eyes all over.
The first watch of the collection was launched in 2010 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the celestial observations of Galileo Galilei. Today, the master timepiece is now highlighted by a Grade 5 titanium case, with a sandblasted finish and a steeper gradient. Its impact is enhanced by the visual contrast it makes with the bezel, the crown and the lever of the crown-protecting Safety Lock device which are made of carbotech. Contrasting with its monochrome spectrum, the military green dial attracts the eye, as does the flange encircling the floating numerals, second and hour dials.
Grey alligator and a sandblasted titanium folding buckle make for a sleek strap.
The Luminor Tourbillon GMT is the natural result of the most advanced technologies tested within the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. Its 47-mm case made of Grade 5 Titanium, is 40% lighter than steel, tougher and corrosion resistant. However, what makes this piece unique isn’t its physical properties, rather its creation. Using 3D printing with Direct Metal Laser Sintering, it literally comes into shape from nothing. Layer by layer, titanium power is consolidated by high power fiber optic laser sintering.
The powerful identity of the timepiece is unequivocally conveyed by the P.2005/T caliber within it. A hand-wound mechanical Manufacture movement with GMT function, introduced by Panerai for the first time in 2016, it stands out for its unusual, innovative structure, which had never been used before by the Maison. Mechanical interpretation with steampunk influences is all that remains of the conventional layout of a mechanical watch, which has been distorted and intentionally stripped to the bone. The result is a minimalist design with an original, modern approach, including its three spring barrels mounted in series, which provide a power reserve of six days.
Price is set at $149,000 excluding sales tax.
