NYFW Michael Bastion Spring/Summer 2013 Collection With Audemars Piguet
For the second fashion season in a row, Audemars Piguet, maker of Swiss luxury watches since 1875, was a proud participant in Michael Bastian’s Fashion Week spectacular. The show, held at MADE at Milk Studios was a unique opportunity for the haute horlogerie company to present its Royal Oak design, which is celebrating its global 40th anniversary, to the sphere of men’s fashion.
During the show, designer Michael Bastian himself wore a Royal Oak Chronograph, and many of the looks featured on the runway included tailored clothing, sportswear, accessories and prominently displayed Audemars Piguet Royal Oak timepieces. The designer, who was CFDA’s 2011 Menswear Designer of the Year, displayed a collection that viewers described as “exquisite”.
“This season originally started out six months ago primarily inspired by the palette of the American Color Field painter Helen Frankenthaler (who died in December 2011), but then took some interesting turns along the way,” said the designer when explaining the source of his ideas for the collection.
“We took a left turn and ended up in the late ’70s at a modernist beach house on Fire Island. This image reminds me of my days of hanging out by the most perfect pool with the team from my first GQ magazine ever in June 1981. One of our model friends summed up this season perfectly by coining the collection ‘a Frankenthaler soaked disco sprinkled pool party that you wouldn’t want to miss’. I like this idea of clothes you would wear on the most perfect day where you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but where you are that moment.”
