Hublot Launches Big Bang Meca-10 With World-Renowned Artist Shepard Fairey With Los Angeles Party
Swiss luxury watch manufacturer Hublot debuted its brand-new Big Bang Meca-10 Shepard Fairey timepiece—a collaboration with the world-renowned street artist himself—with a private party at historic Mack Sennett Studios in Los Angeles, California. Fairey, whose iconic work inspired OBEY Clothing, is a perfect fit for the Hublot family, embodying the brand’s “Art of Fusion” slogan and joining the exclusive list of artist collaborations under the “Hublot loves Art” initiative.
As guests—which included VIPs, media and influencers, such as Franz Ferdinand and TV personality Joel McHale—mingled around the expansive space, they enjoyed perfectly crafted libations and sips of Champagne from the onsite bar, as well as Hublot timepieces, displayed in lighted vitrines and Shepard Fairey artwork mounted to the walls. The historic building touted a mural called “American Dreamers” on its façade, painted by Shepard Fairey and artist Vhils earlier this year.
As the soirée ensued, President to Hublot North America Jean-François Sberro introduced a video of the watch collaboration, after which, Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe made a speech. “Once again, Hublot teams with the best of the best. For the first time, the street art star gives life to a miniature ‘mural’ on a time object. The ever-creative rebel has transformed our Big Bang Meca-10 into a canvas on which he distils his iconic aesthetic codes. The watch becomes a creative work fusing the Hublot take on watchmaking with Fairey’s street art.”
Guadalupe then introduced Fairey to the crowd, who also said a few words. “Hublot is about craftsmanship and a very refined execution and that to me is what my art is about: doing whatever it takes to create a visual that I think is important to create. The amazing thing about working with Hublot is that they say, ‘we can try anything that you want’; they were very open to anything that I wanted to experiment with and they take a lot of pride in pushing the envelope in terms of technique. This is a luxury timepiece so there’s no limitation to the length that Hublot will go to execute something in a beautiful and sophisticated way.” Fairey then took the stage to DJ for the rest of the evening.
The Big Bang Meca-10 Shepard Fairey, designed together with the artist, took two years to develop, and features Hublot’s signature in-house movement, a 10-day power reserve, a “gear-driven mechanical aesthetic…[and] an unusual architectural design based around a construction set, with a stylized skeleton revealing the originality of a cogwheel power reserve indicator.”
Additionally, the watch has two barrels and at 3 o’clock, Shepard Fairey’s STAR GEAR logo, which reveals a red dot when the power reserve is reaching its final days, as well as a 6 o’clock gearwheel to show the exact number of days remaining. At 7 o’clock, there is also a small second regulator with the regulating organ. Hublot’s signature “one click” technology is also part of the watch, allowing the owner to quickly swap the strap with ease. Available in black and navy blue colorways, both color options arrive in a presentation case with a signed by Fairey and numbered letterpress print, reading either “Star Gear Collage Red” or “Star Gear Collage Blue,” framed in concrete.
