Hublot Big Bang Unico GMT Carbon: Traveling With A Travellers Watch

When travelling it is very nice to be able to depend on a watch that is made for that purpose. It can make your time abroad that much more comfortable, and easier. So when I recently set off to Hong Kong from Geneva, I was very pleased to be able to strap on the Hublot Big Bang Unico GMT Carbon and take it through its paces in what I consider one of the most captivating cities in the world.

One of the first things that struck me was that despite being quite a large watch, with a diameter of 45mm, it is extremely light thanks to the carbon fibre case. The texture of the carbon makes it a watch that gets noticed, as it adds another layer of complexity to an already intricate design.

When arriving in Hong Kong, the light weight of the Hublot Big Bang Unico GMT Carbon also proved to offer another advantage. Combined with the rubber strap, it was perfect for hot and humid climates as you can often find in Asia. While the watch wears quite large, and it is probably better suited for people with larger wrists, its weight will never slow you down.

The same can be said for its functions. I have yet to find another GMT-watch that is not only as easy to read as this Hublot but also as easy to set. This is thanks to the two pushers on the side of the case that adjust the time up or down in 1 hour increments, and the day/night disc makes it perfectly clear if it is day or night in the other timezone.

The skeletonized dial most certainly makes the watch more interesting to look at, but I was happy to notice that this doesn’t happen at the expense of its legibility. Thank to the bold hands and large numerals the time could always be read at a glance. This was also the case in the evening, or in low light conditions, as Hublot used plenty of Luminova to counter that.

While there is plenty to see in Hong Kong, I did catch myself, several times, looking at my wrist. Not even so much to check the time, but more so to admire the Hublot. While it is a very legible watch, it is also a good looking one, with plenty of details to enjoy. Combine this with its wearing comfort and intuitive setting, and I think that it is safe to say that the Hublot Big Bang Unico GMT Carbon is truly a traveller’s watch.
