Haute Complication: Patek Philippe Ref.5930P-001 World Time Flyback Chronograph

In 2016, Patek Philippe delighted the world with the reference 5930G-010, a watch that combined a world time function with a flyback chronograph. Featuring a blue dial and white gold case, it became an instant favorite of the brand’s connoisseurs with a passion for its more complex creations. Last week Patek Philippe introduced a new version that raises the bar to an even higher level, combining a platinum case with a green dial and details.

This gives the World Time Flyback Chronograph a distinctly different character. Where with its older sibling, blue was the primary color for the dial, this latest creation has more room for white, primarily in the world time ring. This is a clever move of Patek Philippe, as it prevents the green from becoming overpowering and gives the watch a classic touch. It also makes it look larger than the blue version, while its case is an identical 39.5mm in diameter. The watch is relatively slim, with a height of 12.86mm, yet it wears substantially on the wrist due to the higher weight of the platinum case and the three pushers on the side of the case.

These are needed to operate both the world time function as well as the flyback chronograph. The movement that makes this all possible is caliber CH 28-520 HU. Containing over 343 parts and offering a 50-hour power reserve, this self-winding movement is fitted with a gold oscillating weight with the Calatrava cross engraved in it. The flyback chronograph comes with a 30-minute counter, which is placed at the six o’clock position on the hand-guilloched dial. The time of 24 time zones around the world can be read easily from a ring surrounding the dial, indicating whether it is day or night. This gives this Patek Philippe a cosmopolitan vibe and making it a fine example of an Haute Complication.
