Face Off: Cabestan Triple Axis Tourbillon Vs Luna Nera
Arthur Touchot and Alex Rose face off and discuss their pick from Cabestan. How do the Triple Axis Tourbillon and the Luna Nera compare?
Arthur’s Pick: The Cabestan Triple Axis Tourbillon (modeled by photographer Alex Teuscher)
The Triple Axis Tourbillon features a large sapphire that lets in plenty of light to show off its unique dial, and the details on the 1044 components making up Calibre EC 17, a fusée and chain movement boasting a 50 hour power reserve. The watch is quite large at 50.25mm x 45.50mm x 22.30mm but on the wrist, it fits well thanks to its shape. And let’s face it this watch wasn’t designed to hide under the cuff. Verdict: Cabestan launched back in 2003 with the Vertical Winch Tourbillon, a watch that featured a unique vertical movement. The independent Swiss brand instantly caught the attention of those visiting its stand that year, and have had to live up to high expectations ever since. This year, Cabestan took another giant, and bold step forward, by breaking away from its original DNA with the Triple Axis Tourbillon. It’s a risk that has paid off handsomely in my opinion. The new model features an exclusive flying tourbillon that is both technically and aesthetically brilliant.
Alex’s Pick: The Cabestan Luna Nera
The Luna Nera is Cabestan’s second creation, and it holds true to the brand’s original DNA, using a vertical movement and an amazing fusée and chain movement to provide a constant force for the duration of the 72 power reserve. Master watchmaker Eric Coudray added a 3-dimensional moon phase brilliantly set in the center of the movement giving it a full showcase.
Verdict: I’ll keep it short and sweet. For me the Luna Nera encompasses what Cabestan is. A horological lab, with great talent and engineering. There’s no show or pomp and circumstance. Just raw mechanical genius.
