Close Up: Hublot King Power Unico Collection

Today we’re looking at the Hublot King Power Unico Range, with a view into three unique King Power Unico models – King Gold Carbon, Titanium and All Carbon – tailored to a London boutique, only available within the heart of New Bond Street.

The King Power Unico collection is another rung on the ladder for Hublot’s rise to manufacturing in-house movements. Whilst all Hublotistas may be ready to celebrate a decade of Hublot’s signature Big Bang timepiece within the next couple of years, the King Power holds the distinction of the first limited edition model to house the in-house Unico movement, and this is largely owed to the 48mm diameter case.

Coupled with the larger-than-usual case size, the King Power Unico is very much rooted in Hublot ethos – everything is a mixture of materials and the bezel inset reflects a “porthole” view into the inner workings of the watch, essentially mirroring what Hublot is all about in spirit and case.

There are three case-material options for the King Power Unico: All-Carbon, Titanium and King Gold. King Gold precious metal is a composite of 18K red gold, copper and titanium, fused together to make this patented shade of red.

By now, composite gold is a staple in the Hublot collector’s appetite, and the King Gold really helps the King Power Unico stand out as a sporty masterpiece, as the satin-finished gold tethers on the dial enhance the overall focus of the watch. Even on the all-carbon and titanium versions, the white luminescent coating on the hands and tether plates bring the same sharpness to the dial.

The composition doesn’t end at the case material, however, as all King Power Unico versions come with a rubber strap, Hublot’s signature styling take on luxury. The sporting strap completely comforts any wrist it hugs, and the adjustable deployant buckle clasp ensures this very large watch (measuring over 48mm at the lugs) will look the part, no matter what the wrist-size of its collector.

The visible Hublot HUB1240 self-winding Unico movement operates a flyback chronograph with a column wheel, all completely visible from the depths of the front dial. The case rear is completely closed and further adds to the sporty, maritime feel of this collection.

This is a timepiece that caters to those who want the best of all things Hublot in one, and the choice of case material allows you to match your mood – the King Gold’s extroverted looks are noteworthy yet the All-Carbon all-black look really brings a night-rider type of feel to the matching all-black strap. The Titanium version sits comfortably in the middle of road between its two siblings, and all three watches come with the signature non-parallel H-screws – the sign of Hublot “authenticity” for all the King Power Unico throws together within its features.
