Carmelo Anthony’s Watch of the Day: Peter Speake-Marin Spirit Seafire
Watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin is presenting his first chronograph at Baselworld this month, the Spirit Seafire. The dial is distinguished not only by the chronograph counters but by a seconds counter at 9 o’clock in the form of the Speake-Marin “topping tool” logo. (A topping tool is a hand operated rotating wheel that cuts out the teeth in a component wheel, and is rarely used in today’s automated manufactures). There is also a date window, at 3 o’clock on the dial. The Piccadilly style case is made of grade 5 titanium, finished in straight-grained lines. The large indications, all coated in white Super-LumiNova that glows green in the dark, are designed for legibility. The Spirit collection is inspired by military iconography, and this watch is named after the Seafire, a carrier-based airplane deployed by the British navy in 1942 to protect its fleet. The movement is the automatic Caliber C99001-D, with a 48-hour power reserve.
