Bovet And Piaget Win Big At GPHG

This year’s edition of the GPHG, the Oscars of the watch world, was quite different than the years before. What is usually a phenomenal black-tie event was now heavily scaled down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The event could be followed online by watch enthusiasts and industry insiders around the globe, who saw a few surprising, and a few not so surprising winners.

One of the brands that took home not one but two prizes was Bovet. The brand won not only the ‘Ladies’ watch’ category but also the ‘Mechanical exception’ watch prize. In the first category, they won with the elegant Miss Audrey, while in the latter, the Récital 26 Brainstorm Chapter 2 was victorious. Both don’t come as a big surprise, as their refinement, intricate details, and outstanding craftsmanship make them stand out. In particular, this is the case with the Récital 26 Brainstorm Chapter 2, as it is fitted with a sapphire crystal case, allowing you to admire these details from every angle.

Parmigiani Fleurier also did well, as they took home the ‘Innovation prize’  with their Hijri Perpetual Calendar. Crafted from polished titanium, this watch fitted with an extraordinary perpetual calendar based on the Islamic, or Hijri, lunar calendar, making it the first of its kind. Creating such a watch is quite a challenge as this calendar is based on the phases of the moon, making it that the twelve months can have either 29 or 30 days, but can also change as much as -10 to -12 days annually. For Michel Parmigiani, this was probably exactly the challenge he was looking for. Throughout his extensive career, he has always been looking for ways to test his skills further and make the impossible possible.

This is also the case with Piaget, who won the honor of being awarded the ‘Aiguille d’Or,’ the grand prize of the GPHG for their Altiplano Ultimate Concept. Piaget CEO Chabi Nouri was obviously very pleased when she was called up on stage to receive this honor. The Altiplano Ultimate Concept is also a watch without any peers. Powered by a manual wind movement, is it only 2mm thick, making it the world’s thinnest mechanical watch. A truly worthy winner of the Aiguille d’Or.’
