Swatch Keeps Ticking in a Sea of Uncertainties

Swatch Keeps Ticking in a Sea of Uncertainties

Swatch’s CEO Nick Hayak continued to make the rounds of the haute horology literati this week, touting the company’s increased sales even as the European Union pursued an antitrust probe into the Swiss watchmaking giant. Gross sales for the conglomerate were $3.87 billion in the first half of 2012, up 14.4 percent from the same time period in 2011. Operating profits rose 19.4 percent, despite unstable exchange rates and a worldwide scarcity of gold. A simultaneous effort to increase the retail networks of Swatch’s 19 different brands sought to diffuse the impact of high prices across the precious metals market. READ MORE

Steve McQueen’s Tag Heuer Monaco Fetches $799,500

The 1971 Steve McQueen film Le Mans may not have grossed very much in the United States, but a watch worn by McQueen in the film brought in a whopping $799,500 during an auction at Profiles in History yesterday. The 1970 Tag Heuer Monaco was personally selected by McQueen for his endurance-racer character Mike Delaney, who also donned a jumpsuit with a 1960’s-era Tag Heuer logo stitched onto the chest. Mounted on a black alligator strap, the 1970 Monaco was the first square-cased watch to feature an automatic chronograph. It was also one of the first examples of Heuer’s Caliber READ MORE

Singapore Hosts John Travolta to Announce Breitling’s New Navitimer Blue Sky

Actor and 747 pilot John Travolta flew into Singapore yesterday to kick off his endorsement of Breitling’s 60th anniversary edition of its iconic Navitimer line, the Blue Sky. Travolta is in good company in choosing Breitling as his official timepiece; in 1961, Apollo astronaut Scott Carpenter commissioned a 24-hour version of the Navitimer from Breitling, saying it would make time-telling easier in an environment where the distinction between morning and afternoon is arbitrary. Breitling touched the edge of the infinite when Carpenter wore the new 24-hour piece on his successful mission in 1962. Breitling hopes to use Travolta’s star power READ MORE

Harry Winston Revives Feather Marquetry for the 21st Century

Harry Winston Revives Feather Marquetry for the 21st Century

The name Harry Winston is synonymous with diamonds, but the house’s avian creations are what stole the show at Baselword this year. The art of feather marquetry involves selecting feathers from exotic species of birds and artistically arranging them on the face of a timepiece. All the rage in the courts of European royalty during the 1800’s, master artisan Nelly Saunier is reviving the art in four variations for Harry Winston. Silver pheasant, Lady Amherst pheasants, ring-necked pheasants and, of course, peacock feathers, adorn the faces of Saunier’s Harry Winston creations. The feathers used in crafting the watches come from READ MORE

Richard Mille is Represented by a Mystery Ambassador

Richard Mille revealed a new athletic watch this week, a version of the RM 38 that seems to be clad in Jamaica’s colors. Adding a degree of mystery is the Olympic rule which forbids Mille to name the inspiration for the theme, who happens to be competing in London, until three days after the closing ceremonies. Hublot already employs gold-medal sprinter Usain Bolt as a brand ambassador, so that rules him out. One possibility is 22 year old Yohan Blake, who is seen as Bolt’s probable replacement and possible usurper. Blake beat Bolt in Olympic trials for the 100 m READ MORE
