Cartier Flexes its Watchmaking Muscle at SIHH

Cartier Flexes its Watchmaking Muscle at SIHH

Cartier, the brand with all the buzz this year, made a virtuoso display of watchmaking prowess at the 2013 SIHH. The brand introduced no less than 110 new models, including 40 high jewelry pieces, eight models in its Metiers d’art collection and five (five!) new in-house movements. The most important of these is the 1904-CH MC, the brand’s first in-house chronograph caliber. The self-winding column-wheel chronograph movement was presented in eight references in the Calibre de Cartier collection. Powered by two barrels, the movement is fitted with a vertical coupling that allows the traditional jumps of the seconds hand to READ MORE

Time Travel

Time Travel

Millions of tourists visit Switzerland every year for its famous Alpine ski resorts and five-star spas on pristine lakes, but watch lovers know another Switzerland that combines the thrill of horological discovery with breathtaking scenery. Instead of the resorts and casinos of Lugano or the glamour and excitement of St. Moritz and Gstaad, they are drawn to the hamlets of Fleurier and the charms of Lake Neuchâtel, and instead of Alps, they savor the scenic peaks and valleys of the rugged Jura Mountains. This is the birthplace of watchmaking, a mecca for watch aficionados and the perfect destination for anyone READ MORE

Chopard’s New Racing Collection

Chopard’s New Racing Collection

Some of Chopard’s most interesting and collectible watches are the special editions it creates to commemorate Italy’s scenic Mille Miglia race, which the brand has sponsored since 1988. In 2002, the brand also became sponsor of the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique. The watches introduced for this year’s race are more classic than the ultra-sporty Mille Miglia. These beautiful, understated watches echo the aesthetic of the single-seaters that take part in the race – all made between 1947 and 1978, with matte titanium cases and anthracite dials. This understated backdrop is accented by bright orange or blue accents on the READ MORE

Longines’ History Defines Watchmaking

Longines celebrates its 180th anniversary this year with a great new series of mechanical watches called the Saint-Imier collection. The name is a tribute to the village in the Swiss Jura in the heart of the country’s watchmaking district where the brand was founded. I visited the town last week and stopped by the Longines Museum for a quick trip through time. Like most Swiss watch companies, Longines began life as a comptoir d’etablissage, the French term for what we would call a cottage industry. The owner of an etablissage produced watches by dividing the work according to components and READ MORE

Chanel J12: The Real Thing

Chanel J12: The Real Thing

A few days ago, I found out how tricky it is to hand-stitch an Hermès watch strap. Today I discovered the difference between my inexpensive (cheap) ceramic watch and the inimitable Chanel J12, after visiting the brand’s watch manufacture in La Chaud-de-Fonds. The links on the white ceramic bracelet of my watch are all exactly the same size, shape and thickness. This means the bracelet was made using two different molds – one for each of the links on either side of the bracelet. The Chanel bracelet is made using 20 different molds, to create links for a bracelet that READ MORE
