Rise and Shine with Montblanc

Rise and Shine with Montblanc

The Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Rising Hours is like a jumping hour with a twist. The central numeral in the window at 12 o’clock reveals not only the hour but whether it’s a day or night hour. How does this work? The numerals 1 to 12 are cut out, skeleton-fashion, from an upper disc, which rotates above a bicolour day/night disc so that a light or dark hue appears behind the numeral – blue for night time hours and black for day. In the picture shown, the 6 is ingeniously dual-toned to indicate that day is ending and night is falling. READ MORE

Greubel Forsey’s Elaborate Staging of Time

Greubel Forsey’s Elaborate Staging of Time

It comes as no surprise that watchmaking impresarios Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey are working on a new tourbillon with nano-sculptor Willard Wigan, given the micro-sculptural quality of their timepieces. The piece, with a tiny Wigan sculpture that will be viewed through a lens over the crown, is still in progress; Art Piece 1 will be unveiled later this year. In the meantime, the duo introduced three completed superwatches at the SIHH, demonstrating all the hallmarks of a Greubel Forsey timepiece: inclined escapements, tourbillon movements and three-dimensional construction that resembles sculpture. The manual wound movement of the Double Balancier is READ MORE

Ralph Lauren Goes High and Low at SIHH

Ralph Lauren Goes High and Low at SIHH

The biggest news at Ralph Lauren this year was the brand’s first tourbillon – a mere four years after the watch brand was launched. The RL 67 Safari Tourbillon, with a movement made by niche fabricator La Fabrique du Temps, is a great looking watch. The Safari’s trademark aesthetic, a combination of sporty (gun-metal finish and screw-topped bezel) and dressy (Roman numerals, minimalist dial with classic railway track index) is somehow a perfect venue for a tourbillon carriage. It changes the typical aesthetic for a tourbillon, which is either very classic or avant-garde. The movement is a micro-rotor powered READ MORE

Baume & Mercier Celebrates Design

Baume & Mercier Celebrates Design

Founded in 1830, Baume & Mercier is the seventh-oldest Swiss watch brand, and thus has a long heritage to tap into for inspiration. The new men’s collection, Clifton, is closely inspired by a model from the 1950s – right down to the unique numeral font on its minimalist dial. The Clifton is also uniquely representative of the brand, as it was initially designed to give the brand a greater, more accessible appeal – it is priced beginning at $3,000. Movements for the Clifton 1830, the cornerstone of the collection, are made by La Joux-Perret. There are eight references, of which READ MORE

Parmigiani Rocks at SIHH

Parmigiani Rocks at SIHH

Boutique brand Parmigiani Fleurier’s watches may get less hype than some of the giant SIHH brands, but they do not take a back seat in terms of watchmaking innovation and sheer beauty of finish. Take the Toric Quaestor Labyrinthe, a minute repeater with a dial designed as a tribute to the maze-like pattern of Greek mythology. Two innovations enhance the quality of sound in this repeater. The in-house manual winding movement PF357 includes a reinforcement to steady the mechanism: the pawl of the chime is linked to the case, ensuring that the sound reverberates without any interference from the movement’s READ MORE
