Franco-Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez‘s signature play of colors and color combinations has been immortalized in the new timepiece. Evoking the motions and emotions found in the late artist’s most famous works, the watch was unveiled at the Espace Expression gallery in Miami with his family in attendance.

The Classic Fusion Cruz-Diez from the Swiss watchmaker has parallel discs that rotate in sequence, creating color combinations that change as quick as the seconds do on the watch itself. The dial is designed on two levels treated in Pantone colors. The hour hand is on the first level, the minute hand on the second.

“We are very excited to present this project,” says Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO of Hublot. It is the culmination of developments made since our first collaboration with Carlos Cruz-Diez in 2015, and a tribute to his work. Kinetic art is a disruptive art form that places the spectator’s perception at the center of the piece in order to question the purpose and status of a work of art. Together, we have created a working piece of art that can be worn on the wrist.”

The piece also features the artist’s metallic signature on the case-back.
The Classic Fusion Cruz-Diez is available with two case sizes (45mm and 38mm) in a choice of three materials: 100 and 25 titanium pieces, 30 and 20 King Gold pieces and 100 and 25 black ceramic pieces, respectively.

As Carlos Cruz-Diez said himself, “Color is light, time and space. Color is not in the past, it is a continuous present.” This timekeeping piece of art holds that truth within.
