Jacob & Co Opera Godfather: An Offer You Cannot Refuse
Few movies, if any, can live up to the status that The Godfather has achieved. This 1972 blockbuster, featuring Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone, also features one of the most memorable theme songs in history. It was written by Italian composer Giovanni “Nino” Rota, and its first few notes are enough to be recognized by people around the world. For Jacob & Co, the movie, but especially the music, was the inspiration for the creation of an exceptional watch.
Measuring 49mm in diameter and being 23mm heigh, the Opera Godfather is a substantial creation. Not that you mind because not only is this watch a statement piece, there is so much to see. The watch is fitted with a manual wind movement with a 50-hour power reserve and a triple-axis tourbillon. Prominently visible at the front of the watch are two cylinders with pins in them which represent the melody. When activated by a pusher at two o’clock, they start turning against a comb, and the familiar Godfather-theme emerges from the case. The combs themselves are hidden under the miniature piano and the plate with The Godfather logo. The pins are placed by hand with exceptional care as with just one misalignment, and the entire melody is ruined.
This is not the only thing that starts to turn, because once activated, the whole movement turns as well. Just as with the Jacob & Co Astronomia does the subdial that displays the hours and minutes remains always horizontal. The case is crafted from titanium with a black DLC-coating and topped off with a domed sapphire crystal. In addition, there are also sapphire crystals placed on the sides of the case. This not only allows for even more light to enter the movement but also will enable you to admire all the intricate details from multiple angles.
One of the details can be found in the middle of the watch, where we see a detailed miniature Don Corleone sitting in a chair enjoying a cigar. It forms the finishing touch on a watch that, just like the movie, has no equal. With this Opera Godfather, Jacob & Co has indeed succeeded in making you an offer you cannot refuse.
