Watch of the Week: Vacheron Constantin Overseas World Time

When it comes to stainless steel Haute Horlogerie sports watches there is a lot to choose these days. Many are new entries, but some are part of an exclusive inner circle. Among them is the Vacheron Constantin Overseas. Revamped in 2016, the Overseas collection comes with something that many of its competitors don’t have: a world time complication.

It is Caliber 2460 WT/1 that forms the heart of this watch and powers the Overseas World Time. This movement is in every way what you would expect to find in a Vacheron Constantin. Good design, well build, carrying the Geneva Seal. You can admire it all through the glass case back, including the beautiful 22K rose gold rotor featuring a compass rose. Although the movement most certainly doesn’t look lost in the case, you do notice that the watch, which is 43.5 mm in diameter, itself is quite a bit larger than the movement, which measures 36.6mm in diameter. In most cases, this is done so that the watch can meet certain trends, but that is not why Vacheron Constantin did it.

The Overseas World Time is one of the few watches that displays not only the 24 main time zones but also the 13 that are off by half an hour or a quarter. To do this in a way that it is still readable you need space, and fortunately, Vacheron Constantin takes this space!

Visually the watch is busy but balanced. It gives you a lot of information, and that should also be part of the appeal of owning a world time watch. It is also interesting to note that Vacheron Constantin went the extra mile to make this Overseas a functional and robust globetrotter. Its water resistance is, for example, no less than 150 meters, and a ring of soft iron around the movement increases its anti-magnetic capacities.

Lets also not forget the strap system that is now standard on all Overseas models including the World Time. It allows you even abroad to be ready for any occasion. You might prefer to fly with the stainless steel bracelet attached, swap to the alligator strap for that business dinner and the rubber strap for when you hit the pool. That gives the Vacheron Constantin Overseas World Time an almost unprecedented versatility that is not all that common with Haute Horlogerie watches.
