Introducing The Panerai Lo Scienziato Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT Titanio

Panerai Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT Titanio 47mm

Among the novelties from this year’s Officine Panerai collection, highlighted in our review “SIHH 2016 Novelties from Officine Panerai”, one of our favourites is the latest edition of the “Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT Titanio 47mm” from the “Lo Scienziato” collection dedicated to Galileo Galilei.

This new “Lo Scienziato”, in titanium for the first time, features typical Panerai characteristics but is considerably lighter, thanks to its titanium case and movement. The absence of a traditional dial contributes to the overall reduction in weight as well – a choice that also results in an original and powerful display of hours, small seconds, second time zone, 24 hour indicator, and tourbillon.

Made of brushed titanium produced with complex and innovative technology (Direct Metal Laser Sintering), this new classic 47 mm Luminor 1950 case weighs 40% less than steel, while the new caliber P.2005/T with titanium bridges and plates is 35% lighter than the previous version of the skeletonized hand-wound mechanical caliber P.2005/S.

Without a traditional dial, all elements that normally comprise it, such as hour markers, are attached directly to the movement or the flange. Inside a small seconds dial at 9 o’clock a small indicator rotates showing the rotation of the tourbillon. At 3 o’clock, another small dial indicates whether the central second time zone hand (GMT) refers to day or night. The indicator for the six day power reserve, a duration made possible by three spring barrels connected in series, is on the back of the watch, visible through a large sapphire crystal porthole.

The overall effect is fascinating on both sides of the timepiece, where you can see the winding and unwinding of the spring inside each barrel, the intricate interconnection of the wheel work and in particular the rotation of the tourbillon cage, which, in the Panerai patented version, rotates on an axis which is perpendicular, not parallel to, the balance, making a complete rotation every 30 seconds instead of once a minute.
