Haute Woman: Hands-On with the Chopard Happy Sport Medium Automatic Two Tone

For this weekend’s edition of Haute Woman, we’re reviewing the newest version of one of the most iconic ladies’ timepieces: the Chopard Happy Sport. This model, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, was released in a new two-tone edition at Baselworld 2014:

The Chopard Happy Sport Medium Automatic Two Tone combines steel and 18K rose gold in a fresh take on this classic. The two materials both contrast with and complement each other beautifully, on the 36mm case and on the bracelet of this model. The bezel and crown are in 18K rose gold, with a blue sapphire decorating the crown.

The silver-toned dial features a central guilloché motif and gold-toned hour markers. The dial also features the Happy Sport’s signature floating diamonds; seven sparkling jewels which move around the dial in concert with your wrist’s movement. The tinkle of the diamonds cascading across the dial and into each other evokes a visceral reaction, and draws the eye to the wrist throughout the day.

A mechanical self-winding movement powers the Happy Sport Medium Automatic Two Tone. This movement works at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz) and boasts a 42-hour power reserve. A sapphire crystal caseback showcases its straight Côtes de Genève motif (also known as Geneva stripes) and 25 jewels.

While this timepiece is certainly worthy of the most special occasions, it is also remarkably utilitarian. Functions include hours, minutes, and seconds, and there is a date window between 4 and 5 o’clock on the dial. And with a 30 meter water resistance and a secure folding clasp, it would do nicely in the sporting department.

Retailing for $17,330, this two-tone edition is a beautiful new take on Caroline Scheufele’s iconic 1993 Happy Sport design.
