Hands-On With the Urwerk EMC Black

Last month, Haute Time contributor and Marcus Watches Digital Manager Alex Rose, picked out the Urwerk EMC as one of the most exciting watches on the market. No doubt he’ll feel a sense of achievement now that the model has been awarded this year’s Innovation and Mechanical Exception prizes at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve. This particular model that was rewarded is the EMC Black, which features a few changes in the case design from the model Alex reviewed. Let’s take a closer look at what’s new.

As mentioned by Alex, the EMC is a fully 100% mechanical watch… with some artificial intelligence added to it. The watch allows the user to monitor the timing according to his or her lifestyle, a first in the industry. That allows the wearer to limit the effects of temperature, as well as shocks, that can adversely affect the isochronism (timing regularity) of a wristwatch, via a winding handle that generates electricity to power the precision indicator.

“You can fine-tune one of the most exciting, most jubilant mechanisms invented – the mechanical watch – all by yourself,” says the brand’s co-creater, Felix Baumgartner.

Once again the EMC Black features a deconstructed dial with 4 separate indications. From the top left corner, those are a precision indicator, a seconds dial, an hour and minutes indication, and a power reserve. Turning EMC over reveals the in-house movement with integrated circuit board present in the alternative EMC.

The previous edition had a more industrial look, which it got from the titanium and steel and satin finish of its case. This time, the case is black coated and the watch also features the brand’s signature fluorescent colors on the indexes. The EMC Black is priced at $123,000.
