Face Off: Two Limited Edition Maurice LaCroix Masterpiece Watches

Arthur Touchot and Alex Rose face off and discuss their pick from Maurice LaCroix. And while they usually select two very different models from a specific brand’s collection, this time they take a look at one model in particular. Released in two limited editions presenting very small differences, this year’s Maurice LaCroix Masterpiece variations create an interesting challenge for choosy collectors.

Arthur’s Pick: The Maurice LaCroix Masterpiece Gravity 40th Anniversary

Maurice LaCroix Masterpiece Limited Edition Watch

Maurice Lacroix has made no secret of its intention to grow in the high-end segment, and is doing so with great effect through the Masterpiece line. The Swiss company has introduced several thought-provoking designs, and the Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Gravity is no different. This is a watch in which aesthetics rule. The watch is well sized at 43mm, and that’s because it can easily become messy to have several components on a small dial at once. Maurice Lacroix got it just right though, by featuring hours and minutes off-center. In my mind, Roman numerals go against all the above and anchor the watch in what’s been done in the past. It’s purely subjective, but that’s why I prefer this limited edition, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the brand, and hopefully the sign of what’s to come in the next fourty years.

Alex’s Pick: The Maurice LaCroix Masterpiece with PVD coating (modeled by photographer Alex Teuscher)

You get so much watch for your money with the Maurice LaCroix Masterpiece Gravity. Its exposed heart, textures and Roman numerals are all characteristic of a vintage watch but the new Masterpiece Gravity presents a modern twist with an Anthracite PVD coated steel that gives it a contemporary look. The watch also has great depth and is sublimed by the large sapphire-domed glass box. It looks just as good with a suit as it does when dressed down, and I imagine this would get a lot of wear time on anyone’s wrist.
