Baselworld 2014: Spotlight on Louis Vuitton

Baselworld 2014: Spotlight on Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton exhibited its new watch collection in a beautiful mansion near the city center of Basel this year again. Among the treasures was a new flying tourbillon, the Tambour eVolution Tourbillon Volant, distinguished by a bridge designed in a stylized “V” motif that was invented by Gaston Vuitton in 1901 to adorn his famous Steamer Bag. The case is made of pink gold, with an MMC  (Metal Matrix Composite) middle, a ceramic/aluminum alloy. It has an automatic movement, Caliber LV81 by La Fabrique du Temps, with a 40-hour power reserve. Another major introduction this year is the Escale World READ MORE

Baselworld 2014: Spotlight on Ulysse Nardin

The most ‘striking’ of Ulysse Nardin’s introductions at this year’s Baselworld was the Imperial Blue, a flying tourbillon with Grand Sonnerie Westminster Carillon, with a safety system that stops the sounding of the passing hours while the time is being corrected. It has twin barrels, covered by barrel bridge made out of striking blue sapphire crystal. It is a limited edition of 20, several pieces of which were sold before Baselworld ended on April 3. Ulysse Nardin, known for its research and development of silicium components, introduced a new anchor escapement this year, showcased as a concept in a carrousel READ MORE

Baselworld 2014: Spotlight on Chanel

Chanel’s most important introduction this year is a fashion-focused homage to the brand’s couture roots, with a new version of the Premiére. The watch has an intertwined leather and steel link bracelet that is reminiscent of Chanel’s iconic handbag straps. It was featured on the runway of Chanel’s Fall/Winter Ready-to-wear shows this spring. It has a black lacquered dial and a quartz movement. There is also a gold version, without the leather element in the bracelet. The Premiére was actually the first watch Chanel created exclusively for women, back in 1987, with a case inspired by the octagonal shape of READ MORE

Baselworld 2014: Spotlight on Bulgari

Baselworld 2014: Spotlight on Bulgari

Bulgari’s watchmaking division continues to impress aficionados with new mechanisms, consolidating its reputation as a manufacture. This year’s dazzler is the introduction of the world’s thinnest tourbillon, the Octo Finissimo Tourbillon, which is just 5.00mm thick. It contains a manual wound caliber, with a tourbillon cage measuring just 1.95mm thick. The entire movement is just 2.23mm thick. The absence of an upper bridge contributes to the slim profile, as does the thin barrel cage, and the watch houses a mainspring that is thinner but longer than usual. Caseback screws were also redesigned and made shorter. The carriage itself pivots by READ MORE

Baselworld 2014: Spotlight on Rolex

Baselworld 2014: Spotlight on Rolex

At this year’s Baselworld, Rolex gave collectors and fans something they have long been requesting: a new Pepsi. That is the nickname for the Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT Master with a distinctive red and blue bezel (pictured below). The GMT Master II captures the color code of the original 1955 version of this iconic model, but with a Cerachrome bezel for the first time. It is a particular color combination that is extremely difficult to do in ceramic, not just in terms of achieving a seamless break between red and blue halves, but because this shade of red is a READ MORE
